Roczenka Mountain
Roczenka Mountain – a peak at 736 meters above sea level in the Mały Beskid Mountains. It is located in the central part of the Łamana Skała Range, between Błasiakówka Mountain in the west and Kiczora Mountain in the east. To the north runs a short ridge flowing through two streams, tributaries of the Targaniczanka, and to the south, a similar ridge flowing through two tributaries of the Kocierzanka.
The Roczenka massif lies entirely within the Silesian Nappe and is composed of Carpathian flysch – a series of alternating sedimentary rocks formed in the former Tethys marine basin, which were folded and thrust northward during the Alpine orogeny.
Both the summit dome and the mountain’s slopes are composed primarily of Godula strata (Upper Cretaceous). The dominant feature is hard, fine- and medium-grained sandstone (often with a slightly greenish tint from the mineral glauconite), interspersed with dark clay shales. Thanks to the resistance of the Godula sandstones to weathering, Roczenka has retained its compact form and has become part of a clearly defined, stable ridge.
The geological structure directly influences the slope relief. Softer shale interbeds are more easily eroded, causing the Roczenka slopes to be severely dissected by flowing streams. These form steep, slit-shaped valleys that flow into the Targaniczanka River in the north and the Kocierzanka River in the south.
Roczenka is almost entirely forested. The main plant community covering the mountain slopes is the fertile Carpathian beech forest. This forest is dominated by European beech, which grows alongside silver fir and sycamore in the lower reaches and in the wetter gullies. The beech forests here create a dense, deeply shaded canopy, beneath which lies a thick layer of leaf litter.
In the summit sections and on the more difficult, steeper slopes, the natural beech forest transitions into mixed forests with a large proportion of spruce. Some of these coniferous stands are the result of former, artificial plantings. Due to the shallow and rocky flysch substrate, these spruce monocultures are now susceptible to strong winds and natural decay, gradually giving way to regenerating beech and fir trees.
The red-marked Little Beskid Trail Bielsko-Biała – Luboń Wielki runs through the summit.
