Sowiniec Hill
Sowiniec – a hill with a height of 354 m above sea level on the Krakow Bridge, in the north-western part of the Sowiniec Range. It is the highest peak in the range, reaching 384 meters above sea level along with Józef Piłsudski Mound. To the northwest, it borders Buźnicka Mountain, and to the south, via the Janasówka Pass, Ostra Góra. Its southeastern slopes descend into the Wolski Dół gorge, its northeastern slopes descend into the Zielony Dół ravine, and its western slopes descend into the Mokry Dół gorge.
Sowiniec is composed of Mesozoic rocks. During Miocene tectonic movements, these rigid formations were cut by numerous faults and shifted vertically relative to each other, contributing to the formation of numerous tectonic horsts. The Sowiniec horst is composed primarily of Upper Jurassic rocky and bedded limestones, up to 200 meters thick. Numerous limestone outcrops are found here. The largest of these are Panieńskie Skały, Wolski Murek, and Kawalerskie Skały. The limestones contain karst features and several caves, shelters, and crevices. The rocks of the Zielony Dół ravine include the Cave in the Wolski Forest, the Cave in Zielony Dół, and the Shelter in Zielony Dół. Kawalerskie Skały contains the Crevice before Gajówka, and the Crevice under Gajówka is located in the smaller rocks west of Kawalerskie Skały.
The slopes of Sowiniec are covered with a forest similar to natural forest. Deciduous trees predominate, primarily beeches, oaks, and birches, with some fir, hornbeam, linden, maples, and sycamores. The trees form birch-oak, birch-oak-beech, mixed oak, solid beech, mixed beech, and mixed birch forests.
At the top of the hill is the vast Sowiniec Glade. In the center of the glade is the Independence Mound named after Marshal Józef Piłsudski, built between 1934 and 1937. From the mound’s summit, there is a view of Kraków and, to the south, the Beskid Wyspowy, Beskid Makowski, Beskid Żywiecko-Orawski, and Beskid Mały. On clear days, the Tatra Mountains are also visible.
The red-marked North-South Chełm-Bielany Trail, the green-marked Salwator-Kryspinów Two Mounds Trail, and the blue-marked Piłsudski Mound-Zoo Circular Trail run through the Sowiniec summit.
