Region: Rügen Island
Rügen Island – the largest island of Germany located in the south-western part of the Baltic Sea. Administratively, it belongs entirely to the district of Vorpommern-Rügen. The area of the island is 926 km², the highest point is Piekberg (161 m above sea level) on the Jasmund peninsula. Rügen is highly fragmented with numerous bays, peninsulas and islets. It is separated from the mainland by the narrow Strelasund Strait, over which a road and rail bridge has been thrown. There are numerous holiday and spa resorts on Rügen. The most numerous town on the island is Sassnitz, to the north of it, on the chalky Jasmund peninsula, is the Jasmund National Park with its cliff formations.
