Region: Rożnów Foothills

Rożnów Foothills – a physiogeographic mesoregion in southern Poland. It borders the Wiśnicz Foothills from the north, the Ciężkowice Foothills from the east, the Low Beskid Mountains and the Sącz Basin from the south, and the Wyspowy Beskid from the west. The highest elevation is Dąbrowska Góra, 583 m a.s.l., located in the southern part of the foothills.

The region has a varied terrain with high elevations and deeply cut valleys. The height of the plateaus exceeds 500 m above sea level. Some of the elevations on these plateaus have the character of small mountains, e.g. Dąbrowska Góra (583 m a.s.l.), Kobylnica (582 m a.s.l.). The largest plateaus are: Rozróg Wał, Mogiła, Styr and Sucha Góra Range, Rosulec, Bukowiec and Jamna Group, Żebraczka Range, Majdan Massif above Rożnów Lake and Ostryż Range. Most of the peaks and plateaus are not forested, which allows for vast panoramas of the Rożnów Foothills, Ciężkowice Foothills, Wyspowy Beskid, Sącz Beskid Montains and Low Beskid Mountains.

Two artificial reservoirs were created in the Dunajec Valley: Rożnów Lake and Czchów Lake, which create a characteristic landscape of the foothills. In addition, the landscape is made up of deeply incised valleys between steeply descending slopes of green hills. Fields, meadows and small clumps of trees dominate, while forests have been preserved on very steep slopes.

The Ciężkowice-Rożnów Landscape Park was created in the best preserved natural areas of the region. Two nature reserves were established. The Diable Skały nature reserve located in Bukowiec was established in 1953 to protect the Ciężkowice sandstone rock groups and the large-scale fissure cave of the Diable Hole in Bukowiec, which was created as a result of tectonic processes. The Styr forest nature reserve was established in 1998 to preserve, for scientific, educational and landscape reasons, the natural forest communities typical of the Carpathian Foothills, consisting of fertile Carpathian beech forest, acidic mountain beech forest, fertile fir forests and oak-hornbeam forests.
