Region: Great Fatra Mountains

Great Fatra Mountains – a vast mountain range in the Western Carpathians in Slovakia. From the north it borders with the Little Fatra Mountains, from the east with the Low Tatra Mountains, from the south with the Kremnica Mountains and from the west with the Turčian Basin. It is built mainly of sedimentary Mesozoic rocks and the granite core comes to the surface only in the area of Smrekovica and Lubochniańska Valley.

The Great Fatra is one of the most uninhabited and uninhabited mountain groups in Slovakia, characterized by long, mountainous, scenic ridges, deep valleys, numerous rock formations and vast forest complexes. It is almost entirely protected as part of the Veľká Fatra National Park, and at the same time well developed for tourism (numerous hiking trails).

The mountain range is divided into 7 subunits: Bralná Fatra, Hôľna Fatra, Lysec, Revúcke podolie, Šiprúň, Šípská Fatra, Zvolen. The highest peak is Ostredok with a height of 1596 m a.s.l.

The most famous valleys of the Great Fatra include Ľubochnianska dolina (the longest), Gaderska dolina, Blatnická dolina, Belianska dolina, Kantorska dolina, Jasenská dolina.
