Region: High Tatra Mountains

High Tatra Mountains – the highest mountain range in Slovakia and Poland. It is a geomorphological part of the Eastern Tatras west of the Kopski Pass, which separates it from the Bielskie Tatras. From the south, it borders the Podtatra Valley. They have an area of 341 km² (260 km² in Slovakia and 81 km² in Poland). The length of the High Tatras is approximately 26 km and the width is 17 km. The highest peak is Gerlachovský štít (2654.4 m a.s.l.).

The High Tatras, like the entire Tatra massif, are a relatively young formation, shaped in their current shape during the Alpine orogeny. The crystalline core of the High Tatras ridge consists of granitoids, formed from the solidification of igneous melt in the Carboniferous and constituting some of the oldest rocks in the Tatra Mountains.
