Tag - Chabenec

Chabenec – a peak with a height of 1955 m a.s.l. in the western part of the Low Tatras. It is located in the main ridge about 7 km west of Chopok. From the east, its massif is separated from Kotliska by a shallow, mountainous depression of the ridge, called Chabeniec Saddle. In the west, the Chabeniec ridge descends gently and long to the wide Sedlo Ďurkova pass. The southern slopes descend to Lomnistá dolina. To the north, a long ridge branches off from the peak, ending with Ľupčianska Magura above the village of Partizánska Ľupča.

The Chabeniec massif is made of granites, forming the core of the main low Tatra ridge. On its steep and rocky slopes, three major valleys of the Low Tatras end with classically formed glacial cirques: from the south – Łomnista Valley, from the northwest Ľupčianska Valley, from the northeast Krížska Valley. The glacial cirque in the Kriška Valley is called Chabenec and has a small lake in it.

The peak of Chabenec, the southern, eastern and western slopes are covered with natural, grassy vegetation of the mountain zone. Only the northern slopes are steep and rocky and are the area where the chamois population acclimatized in the Low Tatras survives.

The entire Chabenec massif lies within the Low Tatras National Park. The southern slopes of the massif are additionally covered by the Skalka nature reserve.
