Chochołowska Valley – a valley in the Western Tatra Mountains, approximately 10 km long. The lower part of the valley, approximately 4 km long, forms a deep and wide gorge with two narrowings: Niżnia Brama Chochołowska and Wyżnia Brama Chochołowska. In the upper part, the valley forks into three main arms: Wyżnia Chochołowska Valley, Starorobociańska Valley and Jarząbcza Valley. In addition to these main branches, the Chochołowska Valley also has many smaller valleys: Mała Sucha Valley, Wielka Sucha Valley, Huciańska Valley, Dudowa Valley, Trzydniowiańska Valley, Głębowiec Valley, Długa Valley, Kryta Valley, Wielkie Koryciska Valley, Małe Koryciska Valley and many gullies.
The Chochołowska Valley is made up of two main types of rocks. The southern part, above Wyżnia Brama Chochołowska, is made up of crystalline rocks – gneisses and granites. The northern part is made up of sedimentary rocks – shales, Cretaceous limestones and Triassic dolomites. The geological origin of these parts of the valley is also different. In the upper part, above the Chochołowska High Gate, geological forms created by the glacier dominate, in the lower part, where the glacier did not reach, the surface was mainly modelled by the Chochołowski Stream and karst phenomena. The effects of these karst phenomena are also numerous caves, with the largest Chochołowska Crack at the forefront.
The valley is mostly covered with spruce forests. In the lower part, there are lower montane forests with an admixture of beech, fir and relic Scots pine, which has the largest concentration here in the Polish Tatras. The upper part of the valley is covered with upper montane spruce forest, which passes into the dwarf pine zone. The peaks and ridges of the higher mountains are covered with grass. Within the valley, there are also numerous clearings and meadows, which are still grazed. At the bottom of the valley there are several scenic clearings: Siwa Polana, Merkusia Polana, Kryta Polana, Huciska Polana, Długa Polana, Polana pod Jaworki, Trzydniówka Polana, Niżnia Jarząbcza Polana and Chochołowska Polana, from which there is a view of the peaks of Grześ, Rakoń, Wołowiec, Kończysty Wierch and Trzydniowiański Wierch.
