Tag - Czerwone Wierchy
Czerwone Wierchy (Red Peaks) – a mountain range located in the main ridge of the Western Tatra Mountains. The Polish-Slovak border runs through it. It is located above three valleys: the Cicha Valley, the Kościelisko Valley, the Bystra Valley and their branches: the Tomanowa Valley, the Tomanowa Liptowska Valley, the Kondratowa Valley, the Mała Łąka Valley and the Miętusia Valley.
Czerwone Wierchy consists of four peaks, looking from west to east they are: Ciemniak (2096 m a.s.l.), Krzesanica (2122 m a.s.l.), Małołączniak (2096 m a.s.l.), Kopa Kondracka (2005 m a.s.l.). The peaks are separated by passes: the Mułowa Pass (2067 m a.s.l.), between Ciemniak and Krzesanica, Litworowa Pass (2037 m a.s.l.), between Krzesanica and Małołączniak, the Małołącka Pass (1924 m a.s.l.), between Małołączniak and Kopa Kondracka.
Several ridges branch off from Czerwone Wierchy: the northern ridge of Kopa Kondracka to Giewont, the north-western ridge of Małołączniak through Czerwony Grzbiet descending to Mały Regiel, the northern ridge of Krzesanica through Kozi Grzbiet descending to Wielka Świstówka, the north-western ridge of Ciemniak descending through Chuda Turnia and Upłaziańska Kopa to Upłaziański Wierszyk, Rozpadł Grań branching off from Krzesanica to the south, Wysoki and Tomanowy Grzbiet branching off from Ciemniak to the west.
The structure of Czerwone Wierchy is geologically diverse. The core of the massif is made of sedimentary rocks (middle Triassic limestones and dolomites), and the peaks are covered with a mantle of crystalline rocks, granites and gneisses. There are glacial cirques under the peaks.
The name Czerwone Wierchy comes either from the red-brown colour of their slopes, which is given to them by a plant called sitz skucina, which turns red in autumn, and often already in mid-summer, or from the brown moss, called lungwort by the highlanders and originally used only in relation to Małołączniak.
From the peaks of Czerwone Wierchy there are extensive views of the Western Tatra Mountains, the High Tatra Mountains, the Sącz Beskid Mountains, the Pieniny Mountains, the Gorce Mountains, the Wyspowy Beskid, the Żywiec-Orawa Beskid Mountains and the Low Tatra Mountains.
