Tag - Dry Water Valley
Dry Water Valley – a valley of the valleys on the northern side of the main ridge of the Tatras, constituting the border between the High and Western Tatras in the upper part and running through the Reglowe Tatras in the lower part. The Sucha Woda Stream flows at the bottom of the valley, the bed of which is usually dry on long sections, and the water flows in it in underground flows.
The Dry Water Valley is a glacial valley. It is composed primarily of granitoids and (in the part of the Western Tatras) of sedimentary rocks in a typical three-level arrangement. The upper part with rich glacial relief, moraines, cirques, lake basins, mutons is overgrown with dwarf pine and spruce forest, the lower part, gently descending towards the north – with a well-preserved spruce forest. Fragments of the primeval forest have been preserved (e.g. Las Gąsienicowy). There are also raised bogs with dwarf pine in the valley.
The valley is highly developed in karst phenomena. Water flows in underground streams and disappears in burrows not only in the Suchy Potok, but also in its tributaries: in the Czarny Potok and Pańszczycki Potok, then flowing out in distant karst springs. Watercourses sometimes flowing contrary to the terrain relief – so-called dry waters are numerous here. Part of the valley is drained by karst springs flowing out in other valleys, e.g. through the Goryczkowe Wywierzysko, the karst spring of the Kasprowa Niżnia Cave and the Wywierzysko Olczyskie.
In the lower part of the valley there are two small, moraine lakes – Toporowy Staw Wyżni and Niżni.
