Region: Magura Spiska Mountains

Magura Spiska Mountains – a mountain range in Poland and Slovakia, part of the Spišská Foothills. To the north, it borders the Pieniny Mountains, to the west the Podtatrzanska Foothills, the Podtatrzanska Furrow, and the Tatra Mountains, to the south the Podtatrzanska Basin in Slovakia, and to the east the Spišsko-šarišské medzihorie and the Levočka Mountains. The highest peak is Rzepisko (1,259 m above sea level), located on the Slovak side, while the highest peak in Poland is Górków Wierch (1,046 m above sea level), located on the Polish-Slovak border.

The Magura Spiska Mountains belongs to the Central Western Carpathians. Its basement is composed of Podhale flysch (sedimentary rocks dating back 40–30 million years), which forms the gently sloping structure of the Podhale Trough. The geological profile is dominated by two rock complexes: the older, soft Zakopane layers (clayey and marly shales), which form the valleys, and the younger, harder Chochołów and Ostryska layers (resistant sandstones), which form the highest ridges. Due to the gentle flysch structure, the range has an undulating character with long, rounded ridges, domed peaks, and a dense network of streams.

The vegetation is divided into two zones: the lower montane zone and the upper montane zone (above 1,200 meters above sea level). In the lower montane zone, the natural Carpathian beech forests (with beech and fir) have been largely replaced by artificial, damage-prone spruce monocultures, which are currently being naturally rebuilt. The upper montane zone consists of spruce forests with a rich undergrowth of mosses, ferns, and blueberries, which tolerate the acidic flysch substrate well.

The landscape is diversified by vast clearings and montane meadows, created by former pastoral farming (hut farming), rich in crocuses, orchids, and rare grasses. A unique botanical feature is the northern border of the range, where it meets the Pieniny Klippen Belt. The alkaline limestone outcrops there support unique, thermophilic rock vegetation and xerothermic grasslands, contrasting with the acidophilic flora of the rest of the range.
